The CBI this week

CBI director-general Richard Lambert This week the CBI published its revised economic outlook for 2009, following a dramatic drop off in business conditions in the past months. We forecast that the recession will now run for most of 2009 and unemployment peak close to 2.9 million.

A group of CBI members is meeting the prime minister this week to discuss the current economic downturn and what government can do to help business through these difficult times.

Gloomy outlook for manufacturers

The outlook for manufacturing output in the next three months is the weakest for nearly thirty years, according to the latest CBI industrial trends survey.

Domestic and overseas orders continue to be hit by the global economic slowdown, with firms' perceptions of total order book levels no better than in October – the weakest for five years.

CBI chief economic adviser Ian McCafferty said: "The outlook for manufacturers has deteriorated considerably since the banking crisis took a turn for the worse in October. Expectations for output are now the gloomiest in 28 years, while firms' order books remain weak." Read the full news story.
